Introduction

A group wine tour from Cape Town costs about R2,000 per person for a full day with four estates, tastings and lunch. A private tour costs about R2,700 to R5,000 per person, depending on how many of you there are. The cheapest way to the winelands without driving is a hop-on hop-off ticket, from R375, with tastings paid at each estate.

Every price below is the one the operator publishes on its own website, read on 13 October 2026. Operators change their prices and routes, so check when you book. Winetrip doesn't sell tours and isn't paid by any of these operators.

Group day tours

A minibus collects you from your hotel in the morning, visits three or four estates and brings you back in the early evening. Tastings and lunch are usually in the price.

Private tours

A private tour takes only your group, and you can usually choose the estates. Prices per person fall as the group grows.

Wine Tours Cape Town says its private prices are valid until 31 July 2027. Wine Desk prices by group size without saying whether the price is per person or for the group, so ask when you book.

A driver without a guide costs less; wine tasting without a car has more on that.

The Wine Tram and hop-on hop-off buses

The Franschhoek Wine Tram costs R350 per adult and R90 for children aged 3 to 17, for a day on one of its five lines. Tastings are paid at each estate. The tram offers transfers from Cape Town when you book, at a price it doesn't publish, and its rates rise on 1 November 2026. It also runs guided days with lunch and tastings included, from R1,900 to R3,500 per person.

City Sightseeing sells two other ways in:

  • The Franschhoek Wine Tram Xplorer: a return transfer from Cape Town and a tram ticket for R825 (children R595). Tastings and lunch are extra.
  • The hop-on hop-off day ticket, R375 (children R225), which includes the Purple Constantia Valley wine route from Constantia Nek. Tastings are extra.

Cycling tours

  • Bikes 'n Wines runs cycling tours in Stellenbosch from Skilpadvlei, about 15 to 20 km with some hills and gravel: R1,450 by mountain bike with tastings at three stops, or R2,295 by e-bike with four stops and a cheese platter lunch. Riders must be 16 or older; transfers from Cape Town cost extra.
  • Day Trippers runs a private day in Franschhoek with cycling, tastings and a picnic lunch, with pickup in the city, from R1,950 to R6,650 per person depending on group size; e-bikes are R200 extra.

What to check before you book

Before you book

Are tastings included?

Most group tours include them; the Wine Tram, the hop-on hop-off buses and some private tours don't. A tasting costs about R100 at most estates, R50 to R150 depending on the valley (the price index).

Is lunch included?

The minibus group tours include it; coach tours and most private tours don't.

Where's the pickup?

Some collect from your hotel door; others from hotels in certain areas, or near your hotel.

Which estates?

Group tours change their estates by day and availability. If one estate matters to you, a private tour can include it.

Children?

Some tours are adults only; private tours usually take children with their parents.

Doing it yourself

With a car and a designated driver, four tastings at about R100 each come to about R400 per person, plus lunch and fuel. The Cape Winelands day trip guide has five sample days with drive times and tasting prices.
