Introduction

The first wine estates are twenty minutes from Cape Town's city centre. Constantia's vineyards sit on the slopes behind Table Mountain, Durbanville's on the hills to the north, and the nearest of Stellenbosch's half an hour east along the N2. Paarl and Franschhoek are about an hour away, and the valleys beyond make a longer day of it.

We timed the drive from Greenmarket Square in the city centre to every estate on Winetrip within 75 kilometres, for a Saturday at 9:30, with Google's traffic estimates (October 2026). Weekday rush hours on the N1 and N2 add to these times.

Under half an hour: Constantia

Constantia has grown vines since the 1680s, when Groot Constantia was granted to Simon van der Stel. Its estates are close together, so two or three make an easy half day from the city.

About forty minutes: Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch has 131 estates on Winetrip, most of them 35 to 50 minutes from the city. The nearest are on the valley's western side:

  • Vergenoegd Löw, 29 minutes: tastings from R100, open on Sundays, with Clara's Barn for food
  • Meerlust, 31 minutes: tastings from R150
  • Compagniesdrift, 31 minutes: tastings from R75, book ahead
  • Hazendal, 32 minutes: tastings from R155, open on Sundays
  • Villiera, 33 minutes: tastings from R100
  • Koelenhof, 33 minutes: tastings from R80

The town and the estates around it are about 45 minutes away; the Stellenbosch page lists all of them.

About an hour: Paarl and Franschhoek

Paarl's nearest estate is Joostenberg, 34 minutes away near Klapmuts. The next are 41 to 43 minutes out, and these open on Sundays like Joostenberg: Simonsvlei, Anura, KWV, Laborie, Vondeling, Vendôme and Spice Route. Babylonstoren, on the road towards Franschhoek, is 45 minutes.

Franschhoek's estates start at the Groot Drakenstein end of the valley, 47 to 54 minutes out: Rupert & Rothschild, Allée Bleue and Solms-Delta. The village itself is about an hour from the city.

Further out: a full day

Wellington, the Swartland, Darling and Elgin are about an hour away, and Tulbagh, Hemel-en-Aarde and Robertson an hour and a half or more. For those, start early or stay the night: a tasting usually takes about an hour, and the drive back is as long as the drive out.

If you'd rather not drive

Constantia has a wine bus from the V&A Waterfront, and Stellenbosch and Franschhoek have hop-on routes between their estates. Wine tasting without a car has the routes, days and prices.
