Route 62 wine farms: from Robertson to Oudtshoorn, town by town
The wine farms along Route 62, from the Robertson valley through Montagu, Barrydale, Ladismith and Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn: drive times from Cape Town, the estates in each town, how to visit and what tastings cost.

Introduction
Route 62 runs inland from the Breede River valley across the Klein Karoo to Oudtshoorn, with wine farms in every town along the way. Robertson is about two hours from Cape Town and Oudtshoorn about five, so the whole route is a road trip of two or three days rather than a day out. Tastings here are among the cheapest in the Cape: about R50 in the Robertson valley.
The numbered R62 starts near Ashton, where it leaves the R60, and crosses the Langeberg through the Cogmanskloof Pass to Montagu, then runs east through Barrydale, Ladismith and Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn. Most people count the stretch from Worcester through Robertson on the R60 as part of the same route. The drive times below are Google's estimates for a Saturday morning in October 2026; the tasting prices were checked on the estates' own websites on 12 and 13 October 2026.
The short answer
| Town | Drive from Cape Town | Wine farms on Winetrip |
|---|---|---|
| Robertson valley: Robertson, McGregor, Bonnievale, Ashton | About 1 hour 50 | 36 |
| Montagu | About 2 hours 15 | 4 |
| Barrydale | About 2 hours 50 | 1 |
| Ladismith | About 3 hours 40 | 1 |
| Calitzdorp | About 4 hours 10 | 7 |
| Oudtshoorn and De Rust | About 4 hours 45 to 5 hours 10 | 4 |
Along the road, each town is 25 to 50 minutes from the next: Robertson to Montagu about 25 minutes, Montagu to Barrydale about 40, Barrydale to Ladismith about 50, Ladismith to Calitzdorp and Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn about 35 each.
The Robertson valley
The Robertson valley, along the Breede River, has the most wine farms on the route: 36 on Winetrip, around Robertson, McGregor, Bonnievale and Ashton. It's also where tastings cost the least of any Cape valley, about R50 for a standard tasting. Several estates have restaurants, among them Springfield, Bon Courage, Van Loveren, Rietvallei and Weltevrede. Fewer than half have Sunday hours on record; these do.

Planning the trip
- Two or three days. A first day in the Robertson valley, a second through Montagu and Barrydale to Calitzdorp, and a third around Oudtshoorn fits the route without long drives.
- Watch Sundays. Many cellars on the route close on Sundays; each estate's page has its hours for every day of the week, and Winetrip's planner checks them for your date.
- Book where asked. Axe Hill, Peter Bayly, Joubert-Tradauw and Fraai Uitzicht 1798 ask you to book.
- Whoever drives shouldn't taste. The towns are far apart, and South Africa's limit is 0.05 grams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
