Klein Karoo
The Klein Karoo is a semi-arid valley below the Swartberg, followed by Route 62 from Montagu, about 180 km from Cape Town, through Barrydale, Ladismith, Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn to De Rust. It is known for Muscadel, potstill brandy and, around Calitzdorp, Cape port-style wines from Portuguese grapes, and most cellars now make dry reds and whites too. The cellars are mostly small and family-run, spread along nearly 300 km of road, so the route suits a night or two.
